We are taught to hide our weaknesses and internal battles. To ask for help is to declare weakness and weakness has negative consequences.  In this world, it’s almost impossible to imagine a person openly speaking about their desire to end their life without warranting destain from their listener. We are conditioned to believe that physical illness is a tragic accident where mental illness is controllable and exaggerated. Unfortunately, as hard as many organizations are trying, the general public is still awkwardly stepping around the toughest and most important question: “Are you okay?” When the answer is "no", we as a society have no idea what to do next. It is extremely difficult for one to share their harsh thoughts and experiences outside of one particular outlet: MUSIC.

There is a genre for every emotion, a song for every beautiful or horrific experience and every motivating or twisted intention. Depending on who we are and what we want to feel at a given moment, there is a track that can bring it out in us. The power of music continues to push our barriers of understanding. It has the ability to restore memory to Alzheimer's patients, to help cure soldiers suffering from PTSD, to validate any emotion we choose to harness. An important bond that many choose to overlook is the one that the listener has with the band or musician--the ones who write the music that we identify with. We sing along. We identify with the lyrics, whether they're giddy or hate-filled or depressing. When we listen to music, we feel what the musician feels.

The mission of The Learn to Fly Project is to team up with musicians to open the conversation of mental health with their fans. We will be at live shows and the musician will direct their fans to our booth where they can sign up for a FREE, CONFIDENTIAL, 1 HOUR LONG phone consultation with a mental health counselor.

We are hopeful that by enlisting musicians to spearhead this discussion, their fans will be more eager to take control of their own mental health. We also hope that by providing a free and confidential consultation, people will see the value in speaking with an unbiased third party who has their best interests in mind.
